Max-Planck/ACC Super-Diversity Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

The African Centre for Cities (ACC) was established in 2007 at the University of Cape Town as an urban research institute. The ACC is based in the School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, but is interdisciplinary in its scope, drawing expertise on urban issues from across the university. The mission of the ACC is to "facilitate critical urban research and policy discourses for the promotion of vibrant, democratic and sustainable urban development in the global South". 

Call for Applications:

The ACC invites applications for one postdoctoral fellowship to undertake research on "super-diversity, space and design in Cape Town". The ideal candidate will have expertise in urban design, fine art, and critical spatial theory, and an aptitude to engage in public policy processes pertaining to World Design Capital 2014. 

Conditions:

Applicants are expected to have completed a doctoral degree in an area of study relevant to the proposed research within the past five years (e.g. Geography, Architecture, Design).

Successful candidates, as part of professional development, may be required to participate in activities such as limited teaching and supervision that form part of the day-to-day academic life of ACC. The successful candidate must be willing to execute a specific schedule of research tasks.

Value & Tenure:

The Fellowship is for eighteen months and is non-renewable. The value of the Fellowship is R270,000 for eighteen months. The fellowship does not include relocation costs or fringe benefits. Conference grants may be available on application.

Application Requirements:

Applications must be submitted by 20 August 2012 and consist of: 

  • a letter of application stating areas of expertise, research interests and experience
  • copies of academic transcripts; 
  • a CV including a list of publications; and 
  • the names and contact details of at least two academics who have taught, supervised or worked alongside the applicant.

Selection Process:

Eligible and complete applications will be considered by the Director of the African Centre for Cities and a sub-committee.
