The African Centre for Cities is involved in a UCT research project on collaborative governance and the reduction of flooding risk in Cape Town (within the context of increased climate variability). The project is funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and the UK Department for International Development (DfID) as part of the Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) programme. As part of the African Centre for Cities' involvement in the project, Warren Smit participated in a five-day workshop on monitoring and evaluation, held by the IDRC at the Gorée Institute in Dakar, Senegal, 7-11 December 2009. The workshop, which brought together representatives of 23 climate change research projects in Africa, explored ways of using the 'outcome mapping' approach and other techniques to monitor the real achievements of projects. All the CCAA project teams face similar challenges, working with a range of stakeholders to enhance adaptive capacity within a context of great complexity and uncertainty, and the cross-learning between projects was extremely valuable. A seminar on the key outcomes of this workshop, and on a CCAA workshop on mainstreaming gender in climate change adaptation, will take place on Wednesday 24th February 2010, 1:00 - 2:00 pm in the Davies Reading Room (Room 2.27) in the Environmental and Geographical Science Building, Upper Campus, UCT.
